In the past year alone, 39 police officers and 1 reservist died in the line of duty.

On Sunday, the South African Police Service observed its annual National Commemoration Day for the fallen officers at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.

Mabuza was accompanied by Police Minister Bheki Cele and National Police Commissioner Khehla Sithole.

Mabuza said the officers are a vital cog in upholding law and order.

“As we stand in solidarity with the surviving families, we do so knowing that our country is endowed with patriots who are willing to lay their lives in defence of our freedom.

“This South African Police Service memorial remains a sacred symbol to commemorate the members of our police service who sadly died in the line of duty. We mark this day in our annual calendar to remember these fallen heroes and heroines who deeds serve as an example to all of us about what it means to be selfless and patriotic in the service of humanity."

Mabuza added: “These departed members of our police service have paid he ultimate price so that you and me can enjoy the safety, security and freedom that their protection provides.”

Mabuza acknowledged the sacrifice police officers make because of the dangerous nature of their jobs.

“We believe there is no greater vocation than an individual can dedicate themselves than that of policing in an environment of high risk to one’s personal safety. Our dedicated police members are quite aware of this risk and yet they remain committed to serving.

“Their selfless patriotism is not in vain.”

The commemoration event was held virtually for the first time because of Covid-19 restrictions.

Each province held a separate ceremony for the families of the bereaved.
