Police seize R28m cocaine haul at OR Tambo Int. Airport
On Friday, following information received from SAPS Crime Intelligence’s Border Integrity Unit, an intelligence-driven operation was successfully executed, leading to the discovery of the drug consignment.
The South African Police Service (SAPS), working together with key law enforcement partners, intercepted cocaine worth an estimated R28 million at OR Tambo International Airport.
“The cargo, which had arrived on a flight from São Paulo, Brazil, was intercepted immediately upon arrival at approximately 1 pm. The 95 kilograms of cocaine were seized at the cargo section of OR Tambo International Airport,” National Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said on Saturday.
Mathe said no one has been arrested.
“Investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend those involved in the attempted smuggling operation,” she added.
THREE SUSPECTS ARRESTED FOR R998M BUST
In May, three suspects, a Malawian man and woman and a Zambian man, were arrested following an operation involving the Border Management Authority (BMA), the Hawks, SAPS K9 units, and other law enforcement agencies, which uncovered about 713 000 grams of methaqualone (ABBA), used in the production of mandrax.
The drugs were found after the truck the suspects were travelling in was searched at the Beitbridge Border Post.
BMA spokesperson Mmemme Mogotsi said the truck was inspected with a cargo scanner, during which suspicious substances were detected.
