A police officer was
injured and at least one state building petrol bombed during violent protests in Mohlakeng on the West Rand.
The police’s Appel Ernst says members of the community took to the streets in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
The reason for the protests is believed to be related to a lack of service delivery in the area.
Ernst says roads were barricaded with bricks and burning tyres.
"Approximately a thousand protestors attacked the police station and threw it with a petrol bomb. The damage to the structure is not too bad, but all the windows are severely damaged," Ernst says.
Police vehicles were also damaged.
"They looted some of the shops in the area and one police officer was wounded during the protests, he was thrown with a brick,” says Ernst .
Five suspects were arrested on charges of public violence, including two being minors.
Police are monitoring the situation and warned motorists to avoid the R28 as the roads were still heavily barricaded on Wednesday afternoon.
