Police track down stolen Menzi Primary equipment

The teaching equipment stolen at Menzi Primary School on the East Rand was found in a shop in Johannesburg on Friday.

Police arrested four and recovered 22 tablets and three laptops.

The robbers made off with equipment worth thousands of rands, less a week after the school was opened in the Tsakane area in Ekurhuleni.

 More than R3 million was spent to renovate and equip the school as part of a campaign by the provincial education department to move to paperless classrooms.

 Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi says police have asked him to assist in identifying the equipment.

 "We arrived to the scene with our IT specialists and some of the devised were indeed our devices, but because the place is still a crime scene and the police are still at the scene we will await them to conclude their investigation and give us the report. On the basis of that report we'll be in a position to make further comment.”

 Lesufi says the department is elated that some of the equipment has been located.

 "We are hopeful that it will assist us to find all the lost devices so our children’s future can be back on track.”

Police spokesperson Kay Makhubela says they are searching for more suspects and the missing devices.

The suspects will appear at the Tsakane Magistrates Court on Monday.
