Police unions call for better working conditions
Updated | By Jacaranda FM News
Police unions say the working conditions of their
members haven't changed.
Police unions, the South African Police Union (Sapu) and the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Poprcu), made the remarks on Monday as the nation marks National Police Day.
The day aims to express appreciation to men and women in blue uniform and pay homage to fallen heroes.
However, unions feel that the appreciation isn't being matched by action.
Sapu's Western Cape provincial secretary Graham Daniels says violence is one of the challenges faced by officers.
“Part of the challenge is resources, equipment and basically the members need to be aware and sensitive to the fact that there is so much violence towards police officers especially for their firearms.”
Meanwhile, Popcru national spokesperson Richard Mamabolo says there is nothing to celebrate.
Mamabaolo says the union's members blame police management for failing to address the challenges.
"Part of the efforts was to fix the internal working conditions of members [police officers] around issues promotions.”
