The DA's John Steenhuisen has hailed the ruling as a "milestone victory for both our democracy and our constitution."

"The DA is well on track in its preparations," he said.

"For the first time we have registered a candidate in every single ward in the country, our lists are submitted and our deposits paid. Our Metro mayoral candidates have been announced, and their campaigns are already underway."

The IFP's  Velenkosini Hlabisa also welcomed the ruling but is concerned about the impact of Covid.

"We have demonstrated even in the by-elections that we can work under these circumstances; the only factor is the fear of the loss of lives," he said.

The FF+'s Pieter Groenewald, like others, welcomed the opportunity for potential voters to be given a new opportunity to register to vote.

"The electorate must have an opportunity to get rid of those councillors who do not do their work," Groenewald said.

The EFF had wanted to election to be moved to next year but says it will abide by the court ruling.

"We must begin an aggressive program of engaging our people in every street and works tirelessly to remove incompetence and corruption in Local Government," the party said in a statement.
