According to the union's Richard Mamabolo a few days after Tshwane Mayor Solly Msimanga announced the closure of the building, the department went on to declare the building safe without any proof.

"The City of Tshwane had closed down the building where the Department of Correctional Services is housed and just a week after that the department came to members in a meeting and claimed that they had resolved all the challenges complained about and that the building was now habitable. They failed to provide proof of that, there was no certificate that assured members the building is safe."

Mamabolo says some of their members are being threatened by the department for raising concerns about safety.

"Members have been threatened of being summarily dismissed, while the DCS management has failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the building is habitable.

"To date, the management has not responded to our call for discussions, but completely withdrew from engagements on the matter."

Mamabolo says workers need to be relocated to another building.

"We are not saying members must should not go to work but we are saying that can the department please relocate them to different other places, for example Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre where they can do their work and continue providing services without putting their lives at risk."
