Joburg Water has warned residents of Northriding about possible sewerage in the water.
Spokesperson Isaac Dludlu says the contamination is thought to have happened during an excavation.
"Yesterday we had a team that was working on site within the Northriding area.

"A water pipe was leaking and then, during an excavation, the team broke the sewerage pipe as well."
Dludlu says they believe the contamination is limited to a specific area.
"Aureole and Olivenhoudt Streets as well as Boundary and Spionkop residents are urged not to consume the water."
Samples of the water have been taken a laboratory for testing, and the results are expected this afternoon.
Joburg Water has dispatched water tankers to the area.
