The Passenger Rail Agency of SA (Prasa) board aborted it’s much anticipated press briefing on Friday, before it started.

There were gasps of frustration and disbelief from numerous journalists at the Prasa offices in Hatfield, Pretoria when the group’s chief strategy officer Sipho Sithole announced the cancellation.

“As you can see, I am neither the chairperson nor the board of Prasa but I am coming to tell you that the press conference [is cancelled] – after further consultation with the minister – the board has felt that the statement that was issued yesterday is sufficient and there will be no press conference today,” said Sithole.

“I’m the bearer of the news and I will not be able to take any questions on this matter. That is what it is, and we are here.”

Sithole made the announced about 15 minutes after the 11am briefing was expected to start. Some news crews had set up broadcast equipment, hoping to take the briefing live on television channels.

The briefing was scheduled to centre around the axing of Prasa Group chief executive Lucky Montana. The fired executive is scheduled to hold a briefing later in Johannesburg.

On Thursday, the Prasa board led by chairman Popo Molefe announced that it had cut short by almost four months, the six months resignation period that Montana was serving on. -ANA
