Makhura launched his administration's mid-term performance review in Parktown on Tuesday.

Makhura says while his administration has made strides in improving infrastructure and education - crime, a housing backlog, a poor health system and unemployment remain the biggest challenges.

"We have to get to the core of the problem of addressing the conditions under which people live. In a province like ours we need to record that there is pulpable social tension all the time," he says.

The premier also gave the assurance that the development of new roads will not lead to an additional financial burden on Gauteng residents.

"We will not put forward the method of tolling because that is a challenge. It is direct taxation of people who are already barely surviving," Makhura says.

Makhura also adds that police have been tasked to tackle the crime issues effectively in the province.

"We need support from national government. We need to deal with the problem of drugs, violence against women and all murder and robbery," he says.
