Pretoria couple guilty of trying to sell baby for R500

The High Court in
Pretoria has convicted and found a couple from Booysens
guilty on a string of
charges, including child neglect
and human trafficking.
This comes the court heard that 36-year-old Wayne Loubser and 32-year-old Justine Loubser tried selling their baby countless of times in the past year.
Spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority Lumka Mahanjana says the baby boy was also not registered with the Department of Home Affairs.
“It was put on record in court that after the couple had the baby in April 2020 they did not register the child at the Department of Home Affairs with the intention of selling the baby and for the baby not to be traced back to them.
“The couple made the baby drink cool aid while the father ate the baby formula. Th court also heard that the couple repeatedly assaulted the baby a number of times on different occasions.”
Mahanjana says when the mother tried selling her baby for R500 to a local street vendor who has only been identified as ‘Saunder’, a witness notified the police of the incident.
“The police, together with Saunders, set an entrapment for the couple by police giving Saunders R500 buy the baby from the couple. The exchange took place outside the couple’s house between Justine (the mother) and Saunders while Wayne was inside the house.
“The mother took the money and gave Saunders the baby and returned back to the house. Immediately after, the police went inside the house, confiscated the money and arrested the couple. affairs to register the baby as hers,” says Mahanjana.
The case has been postponed to 1 February for sentencing.
