Princess Charlene has returned to her adopted home of Monaco following a lengthy stay in South Africa due to illness.

She has been in her country of birth since March when she travelled to South Africa to attend the funeral of Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini.

The former South African Olympic swimmer was also in the country to raise awareness around rhino poaching in KwaZulu-Natal.

But she was then unable to leave after contracting an infection.

“South Africa has, and always will be, in my heart. Every time I visit this beautiful country, I am filled with immense joy and pride. I want to thank everyone for being so hospitable and supportive during my time here.

“It has been very challenging to be here but at the same time it has been wonderful being back, I would like to thank the doctors who have done a tremendous job helping me,” Princess Charlene said in a statement.

She returned home to Monaco on Sunday evening.
