Protest at Indian consulate over citizenship legislation
A group of students, academics, and activists staged a protest outside the Indian Consulate General in Parktown on Monday.
The individuals are organising under the banner of ‘South Africans against Apartheid India’.
The group is demonstrating against the adoption of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC) by the Indian state.
The NRC requires people living in India to prove their Indian descent using historical documentation as a determinant for citizenship while the CAA limits descendants of religious minorities from being granted citizenship in India.

Protest spokesperson, Faatima Laher says they have a list of demands for the consulate.
“We are asking for the revocation of the CAA and the NRC. We are asking for the cessation of police brutality and the immediate release of protestors,” explained Laher.
“We’re [also] asking for the state of Syria to respect its constitution and its circular values.”
Police have been deployed to monitor the area.
