Protesting pupils disrupt classes at East Bank High in Alex

Classes have been disrupted at East Bank High School in Alexandra, north of Johannesburg amid allegations of mismanagement and poor sanitation.
Pupils have also been protesting over the lack of quality learning and teaching at the school this week.
School Governing Body spokesperson Lucia Poko says there are also divisions among teachers due to the lack of a school principal.
"The challenge is that there is a division amongst the two acting principals, some teachers only go to classes when their favourite acting principal is in charge. There is a tension at the school due to lack of school principal."
Community leader Vincent Ndima says the issues at the school have been ongoing for more than five years.
"There are toilets that not working in the school only four toilets are working for all learners, there are 1 520 learners both males and females use the same toilets, how will it be safe and also the hygiene for learners and this thing will cause a problem."
The school has been the worst-performing high school in Alexandra in matric examination results for more than five years running.
Gauteng Education spokesperson Steve Mabona said they are aware of the issues and are waiting for a full report.
