Protesting WSU student arrested for torching police Nyala

Police in the Eastern Cape have arrested a 24-year-old student in connection with the torching of a police Nyala during this week’s protests at Walter Sisulu University.
The vehicle was torched near the university's Mthatha Campus on Tuesday.
In a video, the police are seen retreating while students are shielding themselves with mattrasses and wooden planks.
In another video, the Nyala is engulfed in flames.
National police spokesperson Vish Naidoo says four members of the Public Order Police unit were injured during the protest.
“One member has since been hospitalized. Two members monitoring the violent protest in a police Nyala fortunately escaped unharmed when the Nyala was set alight. The pair managed to jump out moments before the armoured vehicle burst into flames.”
Naidoo says an arrested student was part of a group of protestors.
“The student was arrested on the N2 near the Walter Sisulu University. He is expected to appear in court on Wednesday morning on charges of public violence, malicious damage to property and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.”
More arrests are imminent, Naidoo says.
