The workers marched to Pikitup’s offices in Braamfontein on Wednesday, calling for permanent jobs and an investigation into claims of corruption at the entity.

Demawusa General Secretary Meshack Ntshauba believes the workers’ demands are fair and reasonable.

“We are demanding the insourcing of the cleaning contractor employees who are being abused because they are earning R112 and R120 per day. We are also demanding the establishment of the Employee Stock Ownership Plan, where they will benefit from the distribution of wealth from Pikitup.

“We are also demanding the distribution of personal protection equipment because currently, the workers are using their clothes, and their contractors don’t care. They don’t even issue them with masks. They are working with filthy things and get exposed to dust.

Ntshauba said their efforts to engage Pikitup have not yielded any results, and the union will now head to court.

“Although Pikitup refused to accept the memorandum, we are going to send it via email, and we are also going to file an application at the Labour Court on Monday, where we will be demanding that they must furnish us with information regarding how many companies were involved in the tendering process and how they were selected to be assigned those tenders.”
