Protests close KwaZulu-Natal University
Lectures were suspended at the University of KwaZulu-Natal on Friday after about 300 students staged a protest at its Westville campus, in Durban.
"The executive management committee deliberated on the situation this morning and took a decision to suspend lectures and teaching activities on all campuses with immediate effect," said spokesman Lesiba Seshoka.
Lectures and teaching activities would resume on February 23.
Colonel Jay Naicker confirmed that Westville Police Station was investigating a case of public violence on the campus and said two protesters, aged 19 and 23, had been arrested.
They were expected to appear soon in the Pinetown Magistrate's Court.
Seshoka said students and staff living off campus could not gain access when they arrived for work and lectures.
He said registration would continue as normal during the period lectures were suspended.
"Students are advised to ensure that their registration is finalised by 20 February 2015."
He said that from February 27 all students and staff would be expected to display student or staff cards to gain access to the campus, lecture rooms, residences or any university facility.
