Workers are unhappy after the power utility said it won’t be able to pay wage increases this year.

The power utility says protesting workers tried to blockade the entrances to several power stations around the country.

Spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe says the Hendrina and the Maatla power stations were the worst-hit.

“There were incidences where people were hindering the movement of people in and out of the power stations.

“We were able to call in the Public Order Police so that they could come and quell the situation and currently we do have some stability there.  We do have some sporadic incidences where people continue to picket,” he says.

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and National Union of Metal Workers South Africa (Numsa) will on Thursday embark on lunch time pickets, where workers will demonstrate their dissatisfaction with the 0% wage increase.

Numsa and Num have also demanded to see the board of Eskom, Minister of Energy Jeff Radebe and President Cyril Ramaphosa.
