Protests hit N3 as holidaymakers return home
Updated | By Marius van der Walt
The N3 Toll Concession has warned of severe interruptions and traffic delays as a result of protest action on the N3 near Mooi River Toll Plaza.
Thousands of motorists are expected to travel on the N3 between KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng as the Easter weekend comes to an end.
The N3 Toll Concession's Con Roux says members of the local community have been protesting since the early hours of this morning.
"A couple of trucks have been set alight both on the N3 and R103. Both roads are entirely closed in both directions so at the moment all traffic has been stacked. This is, of course, a huge problem for holidaymakers returning from Durban to Gauteng. Easter Monday is typically one of our busiest days of the whole year."
Roux says motorist are advised to delay their trips until the situation improves.
"At the moment there is absolutely no point in getting onto the road. All traffic is stacked. We are particularly concerned about the northbound traffic returning from KwaZulu-Natal towards Gauteng because of the heavy traffic volumes that are expected. Motorists will currently experience severe delays so we strongly recommend that motorists delay their trips."
The community is believed to be unhappy about foreigners being given preference when it comes to job opportunities.
