The City of Tshwane has committed R25 million to start repairing a sinkhole on Jean Avenue in Centurion in the coming weeks.

Repair work is set to start in the rainy season, but delays are expected due to the rain and wet ground conditions.

As a result, the city estimates repairs to take more than nine months.

Tshwane MMC for Corporate and Shared Services Cilliers Brink says this sinkhole is the first of up to 24 sinkholes in Tshwane.

23 of these are located in Centurion, Laudium, and Olivenhoutbosch.

The city estimates the combined cost to repair all the sinkholes to be around R60 million.

But the Jean Avenue sinkhole is considered a priority as it has "caused massive disruption to business and traffic flow in the area".

It is also the most expensive to repair.

Parts of Tshwane are prone to sinkholes due to their geological compilation.

"Much of Centurion and Laudium is built on dolomitic soil, which is predisposed to collapse when coming into contact with a large concentration of acidic water," reads the statement by the city.
