Ramaphosa: ANC shouldn’t be working towards coalition agreements
Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
President Cyril Ramaphosa says the ANC aims for nothing less than an outright victory in the 2024 national elections.
Ramaphosa delivered the closing address at the ANC Veterans League conference in Boksburg on Sunday afternoon.
The league elected its top five leadership at the conference, including Snuki Zikalala as president and Mavuso Msimang as his deputy.
Ahead of the conference, Zikalala said they were saddened by the ANC’s co-operation with the EFF to govern certain municipalities, saying it wants the party to cut ties with the red berets.
On Sunday, Ramaphosa expressed his support for the veterans’ call for the ANC not to start working towards coalition agreements.
"I agree with you that the ANC should be working for an outright victory for the 2024 elections,” Ramaphosa said.
"This notion that is going around that yes, we should consider coalitions and all that. As far as I'm concerned, it is not even on the agenda. We are going for an outright victory. And our program of action should also include engagements with organisations with groupings and stakeholders across society.
"As the ANC veterans, as you have said, the ANC should take the initiative of learning from our past mistakes and affirm that we should recognise and respect the independence of civil society organisations.
"Proceeding from this understanding, we should work to ensure that these engagements that we should have with barriers must democratic movement structures leads to cooperation on practical issues of social transformation."
He added that in the next few days, the government will be releasing a one-year review of the implementation of the energy action plan that was put in place.
"It will show the work that has been done to restore and rebuild Eskom to improve the performance of its power plants to unlock massive investment in the new generation. Comrade Kgosientsho Ramokgopa will give an update on how far we have gone in implementing our action plan, which was announced the other year.
"As we have said before, we will not end load shedding overnight. But we have a clear path out of the electricity crisis that will create the conditions for energy security for all South Africans into the future, the well-being of our people and the progress of our society and the development of our economy require that we should overcome crime and violence."
