President Ramaphosa is expected to unveil the new National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) on Tuesday.

The announcement comes a few weeks after the panel appointed by Ramaphosa interviewed eleven candidates for the top job.

Five names were then forwarded to the president for the vetting process to start and to make the final decision.

The expected announcement means that Ramphosa is on time with the deadline to fill the position, set by the Constitutional Court.

The Council for the Advancement of the South African Constitution (CASAC) Lawson Naidoo says the announcement is welcomed.

"We welcome that the president has adhered to the urgency of filling the vacancy of National Director of Public Prosecutions. It's a welcome move because the trust and confidence in the NPA must start immediately," Naidoo says.

Naidoo says appointing a woman NDPP would be a way to redress patriarchy and gender inequality.

"I think there are very well qualified female candidates amongst the shortlist but I'm sure the president will make sure that the person that'll be appointment is the person that he believes can execute constitutional mandate," he adds.

Naidoo did not want to predict who might be appointed as head of the NPA.

The five nominees shortlisted by the advisory panel:

•             Adv Shamila Batohi

•             Adv Siyabulela Mapoma

•             Adv Simphiwe Mlotshwa

•             Adv Rodney de Kock, and

•             Adv Andrea Johnson
