Ramaphosa appoints Ramaite to head NPA
Updated | By Nathan Daniels
President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Silas Ramaite as the acting National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP).
Ramaite is the new prosecutions boss – for now.
He had served as deputy director of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) for 15 years.
Ramaphosa appointed Ramaite within 48 hours of the Consitutional Court judgement which found Shaun Abrahams’ appointment as NPA head to be invalid.
Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga found that former president Jacob Zuma had abused his power when he axed Abrahams’s predecessor Mxolisi Nxasana.

Mandlanga found Zuma’s golden handshake of R17 million to be unconstitutional.
Ramaphosa was given 90 days to permanently fill the position on a permanent basis – something he still intends to do.
In a statement released by the Office of the Presidency, Ramaphosa says he hopes Ramaite will help to restore confidence in the NPA.

“President Ramaphosa has wished Dr Ramaite well in his new role and expressed his belief that this week’s court judgment has set the NPA on a path that will restore the integrity of the authority and build the national’s confidence in the criminal justice system.”
He holds various academic achievements including degrees in criminal, constitutional and administrative law.
