Ramaphosa clarifies DA-run municipalities remark
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa has moved to clarify his controversial remarks about DA-run municipalities and clean governance.
On Monday, Ramaphosa made headlines after urging ANC councillors to learn from DA-run municipalities.
Ramaphosa addressed more than 4,500 councillors at the party’s service delivery roll call at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg, saying it is unacceptable that ANC-led council continue to underperform.
However, speaking to SABC News on Thursday, Ramaphosa said he was referring to the Auditor General's report on clean audits, and not to service delivery in places like Cape Town.
He said residents in black communities in the Mother City do not benefit from the clean audits.
"Clean audits does not mean clean streets. It's a compliance issue. There are quite a number of ANC-run municipalities that have clean audits," the ANC leader added.
"Now, we need to look at this issue in a comprehensive way or in a broader context. From a compliance point of view, a number of them are, but from a transformation point of view, they are not really meeting the mark."
