Ramaphosa delivered the Moses Kotane memorial lecture in Rustenburg on Sunday.

He says the ratings agency Moody's met with him last week and expressed concern about the current state of the ANC.

"I can give hope to our people that we are not a splitting organisation. We are going to remain united as the African National Congress."

But Ramaphosa says the responsibility to keep the ANC intact lies with its members.

"We also need to engage in order to achieve this great responsibility that we were given by our founding members. We need to engage with all sectors of society with the view of providing leadership," he says.

He has urged the ANC to use the upcoming national and policy conferences to rebrand itself, to ensure the party remains "the leader of society".

Ramaphosa also spoke about the released of the Unburdening Report by the South African Council of Churches. He says the report, which deals with allegations of state capture, is of great concern.

"What made me very sad was when the South African Council of Churches stood up before the nation and said that we are on the brink of becoming a mafia state. That should worry any one of us."

Ramaphosa says a judicial commission of inquiry must be instituted, so that the issue can be put to bed once and for all.
