Ramaphosa: No quick fix for SA's energy woes
President Cyril Ramaphosa says the performance of Eskom has been a challenge for a number of years.
Ramaphosa says while there are no quick fixes to the country's energy crisis, the current industrial action has worsened the already-precarious situation.
The president addressed the media on Thursday after a meeting of Southern African Customs Union.
Eskom has implemented stage 6 load shedding after a large number of its workers failed to report for duty amid the ongoing wage negotiations between the utility and labour unions.
The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) met with Eskom management in an attempt to thrash out a wage agreement.
This as the unions have urged workers to return ahead of another meeting at the Central Bargaining Forum on Friday.
Ramaphosa said self-generation is going to help a great deal.
"The increase in self-generation is going to help a great deal, we already have 6800MW that are generated from renewables, but at any given time from solar and wind, they do not generate sufficient energy as to be able to put onto the grid."
Meanwhile, the Numsa insists no decision has been made on a wage offer by Eskom.
The union's Phakamile Hlubi-Majola responded to media reports on Thursday that workers turned down a 7% wage increase offer.
