Ramaphosa proposes Transport Council to iron out issues in sector
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
President Cyril Ramaphosa has proposed the establishment of a permanent Transport Council to resolve issues faced in the transport industry.
Ramaphosa was speaking at the inaugural National Transport Conference in Midrand, Johannesburg, on Monday.
The president said an improved transport system will likely attract investment and increase economic activity, ultimately creating job opportunities.
"To build the partnership that this vision requires, I propose that we consider establishing a permanent Transport Council," the president said
"Modelled on our experience with the Energy Council, this would bring together government, the private sector, and all passenger and logistics service providers across land, air and sea."
The gathering is attended by industry leaders, transport experts, and government officials from the three spheres of government.
Delegates from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) are also present, as South Africa remains a gateway for neighbouring countries in handling exports and imports.
The department is set to outline its priorities in ensuring a safe and efficient transport system.
The conference, which is hosted at the Gallagher Convention Centre, will run until Wednesday.
