President Cyril Ramaphosa has given the Special Investigating Unit the green light to probe several government departments and municipalities.
The probe will include irregularities relating to procurement, improper or unlawful conduct by employees, and unlawful appropriation.
SIU spokesperson Nazreen Pandor says the president signed four proclamations.
"The proclamations relate to certain institutions in the Eastern Cape that were involved in the planning and arrangements in respects of the funeral of the late president Nelson Mandela. He’s also signed proclamations relating to the KZN Department of Transport as well as the media information and communications technology sector of Education and Training Authority.”
Several government departments in the Eastern Cape will be investigated.
The SIU will also take a closer look at the Department of Public Works and the KwaZulu-Natal provincial Department of Transport.
Pandor says the investigation will focus on allegations of serious procurement irregularities as well as maladministration and malpractice.
"So these are independent investigations which will be conducted in the various state entities.”
