Ramaphosa summons Simelane to explain VBS allegations

President Cyril Ramaphosa has asked Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Thembi Simelane for a detailed report on claims linking her to the VBS Mutual Bank scandal.

Earlier this week, News24 and the Daily Maverick reported on an investigation, which revealed that Simelane allegedly received money improperly from the VBS Mutual Bank during her tenure as Polokwane mayor.

Simelane reportedly borrowed R575,600 from Gundo Wealth Solutions, owned by Ralliom Razwinane, to purchase a coffee shop in Sandton.

Razwinane has been charged with fraud, corruption, and money laundering related to his role in facilitating connections and “investments” between municipalities, including the Polokwane Municipality and the now-defunct VBS Bank.

The Presidency’s Vincent Magwenya said Ramaphosa had noted the claims “with concern”.

“The president has requested a detailed report and briefing from the minister on the matter,” he said.

Meanwhile, ActionSA has approached the Office of the Public Reporter with a request to probe the minister.

"We simply cannot afford to overlook this issue, given the implications for our justice system. What’s more, everyone involved in the looting of VBS Bank needs to be prosecuted, regardless of their political affiliation,” the party said.

"Should the Public Protector conclude that there is sufficient evidence of wrongdoing, ActionSA will write to President Cyril Ramaphosa, requesting the immediate removal of Thembi Simelane as Justice Minister.”
