Rand Water begins final phase of major maintenance project
Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
Rand Water has officially commenced the final phase of its large-scale maintenance project, with repair work that started early on Tuesday morning on a major pipeline.
Spokesperson Makenosi Maroo says the project, which began on 29 June 2025, has entered its last leg and is expected to be completed by Friday, 18 July 2025.
Rand Water teams began repairs at 5 a.m. on Tuesday on the O2 pipeline, which has been experiencing leaks.
"We are repairing a leak on the O2 pipeline. Pumping at the Palmiet Pumping Station will be reduced to 67%, which means there will be water at 1,200 megalitres per day at the Palmiet System," says Maroo.
Residents in several major municipalities — including the City of Johannesburg, City of Tshwane, Ekurhuleni Metro, and Madibeng — may experience reduced water pressure during this final phase.
Rand Water has urged residents and businesses to use water sparingly while the work is underway.
"We are urging our residents and consumers to be patient, we would like to thank our customers for their patience and understanding,” added Maroo.
The utility has reassured the public that supply will be closely monitored and managed throughout the week to minimise disruption.
