The explosion, which happened on Sunday, is affecting parts of Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and Tshwane.

"Yesterday, there was an explosion at Rand Water's Palmiet booster station which led to the total disfunction of the station," says Rand Water spokesperson Justice Mohale.

"The three vaulted motors used to run the pump failed due to the result of the explosion and the incident led to the depletion of the reservoir levels.

"Currently, Rand Water is supplying water to its customers that is the city of Johannesburg, Tshwane, Ekurhuleni with 55% of its normal daily supply."

Mohale says technicians are on site in an attempt to restore supply as soon as possible.

"A technical team has been sent to the site to investigate what could the cause have been.

"Certain areas in the east of Johannesburg, Tshwane, and Ekurhuleni may experience water shortages and Rand Water is working around the clock to ensure the repairs are done on time and operation resumes."
