Randfontein farmers, Eskom employee in court for electricity theft
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
The case against three Randfontein farmers arrested for electricity theft and illegal connections is expected to resume in the Randfontein Magistrates' Court on Tuesday for a bail application.
They were arrested last week following an operation targeting electricity theft in the area.
An Eskom employee allegedly involved in illegal activities was also arrested.
The first farmer was arrested for illegally reconnecting the electricity supply after being disconnected due to non-payment of an outstanding account amounting to approximately R1.1 million.
"The arrest also relates to meter tampering and the bypassing of Eskom infrastructure to consume electricity unlawfully," said Eskom Gauteng spokesperson Amanda Qithi.
The second farmer was arrested after an illegally connected transformer was discovered on his property.
Eskom records indicate that the farm has a 25kVA transformer; however, a 100kVA transformer was found connected to the network without approval.
"Eskom teams also visited a third farm where a transformer was removed after a tampered meter was identified," Qithi added.
