Release Andile Lungisa Campaign: Lungisa to be released on parole
Updated | By Karabo Tebele
The Release Andile Lungisa Campaign says it has received confirmation from the former Nelson Mandela Bay councillor Andile Lungisa that he's release on parole is imminent.
Lungisa is serving a two-year sentence after being found guilty of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
He smashed a glass jug over the head of former member of the mayoral committee Rano Kayser in 2018.
His supporters, under the auspices of the Release Andile Lungisa Campaign, say they have gotten word from the man himself that he will soon return to society.
The group’s Abner Mosaase alleges that Lungisa will be released on parole on Tuesday from the North End prison in Port Elizabeth.
Mosaase says the jailed former councillor will be welcomed as a freeman by hundreds of his supporters.
The reason for his release is believed to be the decongestion of overpopulated prisons and Covid-19 considerations.
The Department of Correctional Services’ spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo, however, declined to comment – saying that proper processes need to be followed.
Mosaase says the provincial African National Congress (ANC) must reinstate Lungisa as a councillor.
“We hope that they will apply their mind to the fact that he must go back to work, we believe that Lungisa is a political prisoner of the ANC and therefore, there is nothing that stops him from going back to work because he served the ANC with loyalty and discipline.”
