The two-day long water restrictions were planned for Monday to allow for maintenance work on a raw water pipe at the Vereeniging water purification plant.

It’s understood the additional pipe will allow for more water to be added into the system.

Residents, businesses and service providers in Randburg, Johannesburg, Soweto and Southdale were been warned of throttled water supply.

Rand Water CEO Sipho Mosai announced on Wednesday after that the project had been successfully completed.

“We are happy to give an indication that we not happy have been able to lay this pipe successfully before but we have now been able to tie it in with the other pipes.

“This pipeline and this tie-in is also assisting us with the redundancy in our system in a sense that we will be able to do maintenance with great ease, Mosai told journalists at the site in Vereeniging.

Residents in Mpumalanga, Free State and North West can also breathe a sigh of relief as water pressure is expected to improve by Thursday morning.

“Although we still had water flowing, some of the consumers had a problem with the pressure but we are happy to announce that the lines are now being charged and overnight, leading up to tomorrow, the areas that had a challenge with water pressures would have had their pressures restored.”

Mosai admitted it wasn’t an easy task but says the water utility kept to the brief budget and time.

“As planned we have completed the shutdown.

“All the quality control checks have been done and we’ve given a green light,” he said.

While it may be some good news, residents are now faced with rolling blackouts after load shedding made a dreaded return earlier in the day.
