Repatriation of SANDF troops from DRC delayed
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
The South African National Defence Force said on Thursday the repatriation of the 14 soldiers who died in the Democratic Republic of Congo has been delayed.
The remains were expected to arrive in Pretoria on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, SANDF General Rudzani Maphwanya confirmed to the Portfolio on Defence and Joint Standing Committee on Defence that the remains were on their way to South Africa.
In a short statement on Thursday, the SANDF said all administrative processes were completed and handed over to the United Nations, but there has been a delay.
However, the defence force did not explain the reason for the delay.
The SANDF soldiers were killed in eastern DRC in January amid the conflict with Rwandan-backed M23 rebels.
The slain soldiers were serving in the region as part of the SAMIDRC and the United Nations peacekeeping deployment (MONUSCO), working to promote peace and stability.
