Roads to be affected in fuel protest

Civil organisations and political parties are embarking on a protest action demanding the immediate reduction of fuel costs.

The Freedom Movement is set embark on a protest to the National Treasury in Pretoria.


The Democratic Alliance (DA), Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA) and several taxi associations will lead the protest on Tuesday.


The Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) says officers will be deployed along various streets for the picket commencing at 10:00 and expected to end at 14:00.

"Bosman Street, Dr WF Nkomo Street, Paul Kruger Street and Madiba Street will be affected. Buses will drop off picketers at the corner of Bosman and Dr WF Nkomo Street," says spokesperson, Isaac Mahamba.


The picket demands that government reduce the Road Accident Fund and general fuel levies by R1 per litre or 20 percent.


"People are suffering badly. The sad thing is it is the poorest of the poor suffering the most because they are the people using taxis, two or three trips a day," says OUTA's Ben Theron.

A memorandum of demands will be handed over.


"We are calling on ordinary South Africans to join us in the protest. This is not a political fight, it is apolitical. This is a civil society movement representing every South African struggling to make ends meet in these trying economic times," says the DA's Portia Adams.
