Rocky start to the year as first Joburg council meeting postponed
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
The City of Johannesburg’s first council meeting of the year saw a postponement on Thursday following disruptions by members of the opposition.
The meeting was set to vote for the election of the oversight committee chairpersons.
However, things quickly went south when the Democratic Alliance (DA) led coalition did not agree to a secret ballot that was requested by members of the coalition.

The African National Congress (ANC) in the city says it has been left “sickened” by the DA’s “withholding of democratic processes”.
“This is going against the majority by attempting to impose voting by a show of hands without substantial argument,” says chairperson, Mpho Moerane.

“The tyranny elements of the Democratic Alliance undermine and brings mockery to the National struggle and seeks to deny the residents of Johannesburg service delivery and accountability.”
The council meeting was postponed until next Tuesday.
