RTMC sends team to probe deadly Limpopo bus crash
Updated | By Jacaranda FM Newswatch
The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has sent a team of crash investigators to Limpopo to establish the cause of a bus crash that claimed 42 lives, including workers from Malawi and Zimbabwe.
The bus was travelling to Zimbabwe when it crashed around 90 kilometres from the border on Sunday after the driver apparently lost control.
The casualties include seven children, 17 men and 18 women.
“Traffic flow on the road is affected by ongoing investigations. Motorists are advised to be patient and exercise extreme caution,” said the RTMC’s Simon Zwane.
Transport Minister Barbara Creecy has expressed concern over what she calls a persistent trend of road crashes involving public transport.
She will visit the crash site on Monday afternoon.
Meanwhile, President Cyril Ramaphosa called the crash a tragedy for all three nations and urged road users to do more to stay safe.
"This sadness is compounded by the fact that this incident has taken place during our annual transport month, where we place special focus on the importance of safety on our roads," he said in a statement.
Last year, 45 people died when a bus carrying mostly Botswana nationals to an Easter church gathering plunged into a ravine in Limpopo.
An eight-year-old girl was the sole survivor.
