The African National Congress (ANC) veteran, who was fondly referred to as ‘the mother of the nation’, died on April 2, 2018 in a Johannesburg hospital following a long illness.

Social media has been flooded with messages of remembrance as South Africans and the world pay tribute to the fallen stalwart.

The ruling party's national chair, Gwede Mantashe, tweeted footage talking about Mam' Winnie's role in the struggle.

Mantashe emphasised Madikizela-Mandela's guidance within the ANC.

"She is one of those who would tell us exactly what is wrong and what is right at any time. We’re going to be missing that because it is not just being an icon because of the length of your involvement in the struggle, you become an icon when you provide that guidance. We will be missing that guidance."

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema, who has been campaigning for the Cape Town International Airport to be renamed after Madikizela-Mandela, visited her grave site.

The party's national chairperson, Dali Mpofu, visited Zindzi and Zenani Mandela at the weekend.

Mpofu tweeted a picture of the daughters wearing EFF caps with the caption: "April is going to be a rather difficult month but these two voters are almost in the bag…watch this space."

Madikizela-Mandela passed away at the age of 81, surrounded by family and loved ones, at the Netcare Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg.
