Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa has emphasised the need for South Africa to celebrate its legends while they are still alive.
Mthethwa paid tribute to the late jazz icon Jonas Gwangwa at his funeral service in Soweto on Friday.
The legend, who was afforded an official special provincial funeral, died at the age of 83 – some two weeks after his wife Violet passed on.
Mthethwa said Gwangwa inspired a generation through his music.

There is a need, he said, to preserve and pass down the artistry.
"We need to find a way of preserving their legacy. We need to find a way to celebrate their, we need to honour their work whilst they are still alive.
"We emphasise the point that we need to take a journey with the younger generation," Mthethwa said.
He says The Living Legends fraternity, chaired by Dr John Kani, was borne from the understanding that iconic work forgotten once they die.
"Their work is all over the world and we need to find a way of archiving them and they are their one captains of that journey.”
