SA needs a gender ministry

Non-governmental organisation, Gender Links, says the African National Congress (ANC) has a lot to prove to women after last week's general elections.

This comes after the party confirmed on Monday that it has appointed only two women out of seven premier positions.

The premier for the North West has not yet been confirmed.

Only two of the seven premiers are women - namely Mpumalanga premier Refilwe Mtsweni and Free State premier Sisi Ntombela.

Gender Links spokesperson, Kubi Rama, says they need answers as to why the ANC has not kept to it's own gender parity policy.

"Appointing only two women out of seven provinces is problematic. I would like to understand why that happened, it makes no sense at all in terms of the ANC commitment to the 50/50, " Rama said.

"The ANC has committed itself to 50% women in decision making in its party. It's a voluntary quota, they must live that and they must live it in all levels.

"If you have to appoint eight premiers, four of those should be women. I don't think these things are up for debate anymore you have made the commitment, now you need to walk the talk."

Rama adds that President Cyril Ramaphosa should consider the establishment of a ministry of gender, rather than placing it all with the ministry of women.

"In addition, we would like to see the ANC or the President look very seriously at the ministry of women, children and people with disabilities and showing his commitments by making a gender ministry."
