SA shows slight increase in new Covid-19 cases, positivity rate

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) has reported 4 322 new Covid-19 cases on Wednesday.
There was also a slight increase in the positivity rate -that climbed back over the 10% mark.
A total of 40 654 tests were conducted in the latest 24-hour cycle.
The latest increase in cases represents a 10.6% positivity rate.
Gauteng recorded the highest number of new infections – at 1 047, followed by Western Cape with 982 cases.
“The majority of new cases today are from Gauteng Province (24%), followed by Western Cape (23%). KwaZulu-Natal accounted for 16%; Limpopo accounted for 11%; Eastern Cape accounted for 8%; Free State, Mpumalanga and North West each accounted for 5% respectively; and Northern Cape accounted for 4% of today’s new cases,” says the NICD in a statement.
The National Department of Health reported another backlog in the Covid-19 mortality cases.
This is due to the ongoing audit exercise which has been ongoing for over a week.
The department reported 156 Covid-19 related deaths and of these, 36 occurred in the past 24 – 48 hours.
This brings the total fatalities to 93 707.
There has been an increase of 162 hospital admissions in the past 24 hours with 7 199 people currently admitted in both private and public health facilities.
On the vaccine front, 74 305 Covid-19 vaccines were administered on Wednesday.
