SA sitting on ‘big disaster’, warns Angie Motshekga
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga has warned that her department is “sitting on a big disaster” as it attempts to save what is left of the academic year.
Motshekga visited two high schools in Brits on Tuesday to check on the progress made by grade 12 pupils following their return to school.
“Even when we have trimmed the curriculum we’ll still not be able to claw back what we have lost this year,” she warned.

“We are really sitting on a big disaster that is why we are looking at bringing Information and Communications Technology to claw back at the academic year. The little that we can claw back I think we should.”
The department released the amended school calendar at the weekend.
The academic year, which has faced several disruptions due to the Covid-19 pandemic, will now be completed on 15 December for Grade R-11.
