SA urges Israel, Hamas to commit to all steps in ceasefire deal
Updated | By Emile Pienaar
The South African government has welcomed the Gaza ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas.
The deal will see Hamas free the remaining living hostages in what has been hailed as a significant step towards ending a war that has killed tens of thousands of people and unleashed a humanitarian catastrophe.
The agreement follows a 20-point peace plan for Gaza announced last month by US President Donald Trump, under which Israel should withdraw from Gaza and release hundreds of Palestinian prisoners in exchange for the hostages.
After more than two years of war sparked by Hamas's October 2023 attack on Israel, the deal also envisions a surge of aid into Gaza, where the UN has declared famine.
The Israeli army said it was preparing to pull back troops in Gaza, in line with the agreement, while the office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the deal would only take effect with cabinet approval.
Trump's plan also calls for the disarmament of Hamas and for Gaza to be ruled by a transitional authority headed by the US president himself, though these points have yet to be addressed in any discussions.
Spokesperson for the Department of International Relations and Cooperation, Chrispin Phiri, says this agreement will pave the way for ending the war and bring about enduring peace.
"South Africa urges all parties to commit to the steps agreed upon during negotiations and follow through with a credible and inclusive political process that will ensure an end to the tragic and catastrophic humanitarian situation and prevent further loss of lives," said Phiri.
"We further welcome the announcement of the release of hostages and political prisoners, commend the role played by the guarantor states and call for the immediate, unhindered entry of much-needed humanitarian aid to the besieged Gaza Strip."
Phiri said this type of war should never be allowed to happen again.
"The cost to human lives and the brutality suffered by civilians in Gaza, particularly women and children, has been immeasurable. The devastation left behind on the people of Palestine must never again be inflicted on any civilian population.
"South Africa reiterates its call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire and an end to the occupation and the realisation of the right to self-determination of the Palestinian people. There must be a just and lasting peace, in keeping with values of shared humanity and respect for international law."
He said South Africa is willing to assist in the peace process.
"South Africa stands ready to share its experiences in peacebuilding and transitional justice, including reconciliation, and assist in nation-building efforts moving forward."
