The South African Cabin Crew Association (SACCA) has urged cash-strapped South African Airways (SAA) not to act alone when appointing a business rescue practitioner.

This in spite of the fact that Les Matuson has already been appointed.

“We don’t trust them enough that they will appoint the right one who they do not have direct influence – behind the scenes,” says Sacca president Zazi Nsibanyoni-Mugambi.

Sacca, the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) and Solidarity have written a collective letter to the management, shareholders and board of SAA demanding that unions be included in the talks to appoint a business practitioner.

They set a deadline of 9am on Friday or a response.

The ailing airline has five days to appoint the practitioner after the Corporate and Intellectual Property Commission (CPIC) has confirmed the receival SAA’s application to be placed under voluntary business rescue.

“We need someone independent that everyone can trust and believe in. We don’t have faith that they will appoint someone that is 100% natural that we can trust.”

Nsibanyoni-Mugambi says they have already their own business rescue practitioner in mind.

“Ours can work with theirs, so we not being impossible – so that we can save SAA and jobs – that our primary goal.”
