The South African Cabin Crew Association (SACCA) says the end to the week-long strike at South African Airways (SAA) might be in sight after a fresh offer was put on the table by the employer last night.

According to Zazi Nsibanyoni-Mugambi, SACCA President, the meeting between unions and SAA management lasted well into the early hours of Friday morning.

"We have a draft, which seems like to could end the strike action," says Nsibanyoni-Mugambi.

Nsibanyoni-Mugambi says the offer will be presented to their members on Friday morning to get a mandate on whether the strike can be called off.

She notes that the issue of insourcing has proven to be a potential deal-breaker.

"Our biggest issue, despite increases, was insourcing.," says Nsibanyoni-Mugambi.

"That has been incorporated. The details were the issue I think most of last night."

Regarding a notice form SAA that it will not be able to fulfil salary obligations to employees for November, Nsibanyoni-Mugambi says they are not surprised as this has happened before, "hence we are pushing so hard  for this task-team and turning SAA around and getting real money into SAA coffers."

Both SAA management and the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa), who is also part of the strike, could not immediately be reached for comment.
