SABC being stabilised and rebuilt, Parliament hears
The South African Broadcasting Cooperation (SABC) has told Parliament's Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA) that out of 288 contractions, only 30 have deviated from Treasury guidelines.
The public broadcaster's board and management appeared before SCOPA on Tuesday.
SABC CEO Madoda Mxakwe says the deviations are historical.
"We are stabilising and rebuilding an organisation that was hollowed out and rendered dysfunctional. We have had a series of junior people acting in senior positions and that affects decision making, turnaround times and the stability of the organisation.
"I do not think we created conditions for deviation, if you look at the current contracts we have 288 active contracts and it is 30 of those that are actually deviations and expansions and we doing whatever we can to ensure we in still sound corporate governance in the organisation."
He said the deviations are older contracts and it is difficult to identify people who were originally responsible for the contracts.
