The SAHRC says it is "deeply concerned by reports such as that by Statistics South Africa (Stats SA), titled, Crime Against Women in South Africa 2018, which found that 3,3% of men and 2,3% of women in South Africa think it is acceptable for a man to hit a woman. According to the 2016-17 Victims of Crime Report by Stats SA, a total of 250 out of every 100 000 women were victims of a sexual offence in South Africa. These statistics are amongst the highest in the world."

According to SAHRC Deputy  Chairperson, Priscilla Jana: "The Commission recognises that for South Africa to be an equal society for women, we, as a nation need to urgently address the disproportional amount of gender-based violence and all other forms of intolerance and discrimination against women and girls."
