SAMWU to march in Tshwane over ‘non-payment’ of salary hikes

The South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) is set to march to Tshwane House on Wednesday to protest against various issues, including the non-payment of salary increases.
Workers affiliated with the trade union are expected to deliver a memorandum of demands.
Acting regional secretary Precious Theledi said some issues raised include the non-payment of 3.5% and 5.4% salary increases.
"The unilateral implementation of the performance management system, R500 million Akhile payment, R700 million Altron contract, Payment of annual once-off notch and proper implementation of metro police grading system."
On Tuesday, Tshwane Mayor Cilliers Brink said the city’s dire financial state means it cannot afford to pay any salary increases to municipal workers
This follows the downing of tools by workers at the Centurion municipal offices over salary increase demands.
The union has since distanced itself from the wildcat strike in Centurion.
Theledi said the city must find a way to pay workers.
"The city is playing some games, and the auditor general has also indicated that the city has mismanaged funds. It is their problem of mismanagement and lack of leadership. We can't be held accountable for something that we did not do," she added.
Theledi has warned residents to expect disruptions to municipal services across the city.
