Santaco says cannot take responsibility for Mvelase killing

The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) says it cannot be expected to take responsibility for the killing of an e-hailing driver at Maponya Mall in Soweto last week.
The 27-year-old Siyanda Mvelase was killed following apparent confrontation with minibus taxi drivers at the mall.
The taxi body briefed the media in Johannesburg on Tuesday.
At the same time, Santaco apologised for the incident, as it happened in the "vicinity where it operates" at the mall.
Santaco President Abner Tsebe said the taxi industry has been infiltrated by criminals and called on the law enforcement agencies to act against criminals.
"This is criminality that is committed in our name. We humbly ask for prayers in the community as we are facing infiltration by criminals as we are cleaning up the industry.
“Any operator, driver or member of our associations found to have been involved in the attack or any similar act of violence will be immediately expelled from our ranks." he said
The taxi organisation has since offered to assist help Mvelase's family with funeral costs of their slain son, who will be buried in KwaZulu-Natal.
Meanwhile, no arrests have been made as police investigation continues.
